According to Global Competitiveness Report in 2013, Taiwan has taken the first place in the “State of Cluster Development” index. However, if companies only build the relationships in the same cluster, they might face the fierce competition. Therefore, Companies should cooperate with partners cross the regions or countries to survive. Besides, knowledge is an essential resource for innovation in the cluster. It would be interesting to understand how companies build the external linkages to transfer knowledge. Moreover, even though the ICT has been widely discussed, there are still few studies examining the influences of ICT in the cluster. This study intends to understand (1) how companies transfer knowledge with external linkages and lead to better operational performance, and (2) how ICT mediate the relationship between knowledge transfer and operational performance. A quantitative research approach is employed for data collection.
All of the samples are from industrial clusters, and target on senior and middle managers, factory managers and supervisors. SPSS20.0 and AMOS 21.0 were applied to analyze data with descriptive statistical analysis, reliability and validity analysis, structural model analysis to examine the proposed hypothesis.
According to the results, it shows: (1) the external linkages of suppliers, government and institutions and international activities have positive influences on knowledge transfer, while the customer linkages doesn’t. (2) Knowledge transfer has positive influence on operational performance, (3) knowledge transfer has greater impacts on operational performance because of using ICT.
