This research focuses on Taiwan's commitment to combat global climate change by aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, unveiling a comprehensive strategy that prioritizes carbon sinks, including coastal blue carbon ecosystems, among twelve key initiatives. Despite their importance, there is a limited number of studies addressing public awareness of these ecosystems, underscoring the need for foundational academic research.
To address this gap, a questionnaire survey was conducted from June 3, 2023, to June 16, 2023, using the online platform Survey Cake to assess how the Taiwanese public perceives blue carbon ecosystems and their marine environmental attitudes. A total of 495 questionnaires were distributed, and 429 valid responses were obtained, resulting in a response rate of 86.67%. The collected samples were predominantly female, aged between 20 and 29 years, with many students, and a majority reporting a monthly income of less than 30,000 TWD. The educational background was primarily at the college level, and most respondents resided in the northern region of Taiwan. Findings reveal an average perception score of 3.35, indicating a moderate level of understanding with potential for enhancement. Factors influencing perceptions include place of residence, participation in marine conservation activities, and visits to blue carbon ecosystem-related attractions. Encouragingly, the research highlights a positive marine environmental attitude score of 4.23 among the Taiwanese public. Furthermore, a positive correlation was observed between public perception of blue carbon ecosystems and their marine environmental attitudes, suggesting opportunities to enhance environmental awareness through tailored educational campaigns and conservation endeavors.
These insights are relevant to policymakers and governmental authorities, offering guidance for harnessing the potential of blue carbon ecosystems and fostering greater public engagement and comprehension in pursuit of sustainable environmental goals.
