As the global population ages, Professional Active Retirees (PARs) are increasingly seeking tourism experiences that align with their intellectual, cultural, and emotional aspirations. This study explores the factors contributing to memorable tourism experiences (MTEs) for PARs, using the MTE scale, which examines seven dimensions: hedonism, refreshment, meaningfulness, local culture, involvement, knowledge, and novelty. Focusing on Taiwan's English Walking Route in Tainan, the research evaluates how these dimensions shape the tourism experiences of PARs and identifies main areas for improvement.
Data collection involved questionnaires, interviews, and participant observations, targeting Professional Active Retirees (PARs) aged 65 to 74. The findings reveal knowledge acquisition, cultural immersion, and sensory engagement as critical elements of memorable experiences. However, challenges related to involvement, novelty, and refreshment emerged as primary pain points, stemming from rushed itineraries, insufficient rest breaks, and limited opportunities for reflection and physical engagement. To address these gaps, the study applied the Double Diamond Model, engaging stakeholders and Professional Active Retirees (PARs) in co-creation workshops to develop innovative service design solutions, including interactive storytelling, structured rest stops with cultural activities, and customizable tour itineraries.
This research bridges a critical gap in senior tourism studies by integrating service design principles to enhance MTEs for PARs. The findings provide actionable insights for the tourism industry, emphasizing the importance of balancing intellectual stimulation with physical comfort and emotional resonance. By tailoring tourism services to the needs of PARs, the study contributes to both academic understanding and the practical advancement of cultural tourism for an aging population.
