Acquiring resources and knowledge via balanced organizational learning strategies is a critical issue in the past decades. Previous research has examined the effect of organizational learning on organizational performance. They argue the overemphasis on one side of learning behavior will lead the firms to fall into some traps. They suggest firms to pursue for exploration and exploitation simultaneously, namely, ambidexterity. In addition, organizations are facing numerous the interior and exterior challenges. They have to make decisions and develop strategies to adapt the rapid surrounding changes.
In this research, we argue that there is a trade-off between exploration and exploitation with respect to their influences on financial performance. In addition, this study applies multiple regression models to examine the moderating impacts of three task environments on the relationship between organizational learning and performance in terms of munificence, complexity, and dynamism drawing from Dess and Beard (1984). We find there is an inverted “U” shaped curvilinear relationship between organizational learning and financial performance. The ambidexterity of learning has a significantly positive relationship with performance. And the moderating effects of environments are also confirmed.
