The main objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between university researchers' characteristics and performance in university-industry cooperation. In this study, the output of university-industry cooperation are classified into three categories, academic performance, educational performance, and commercial performance. We also investigate the cooperation strength between researchers and industries. Thus, we apply social tie as a moderate variable to discuss how cooperation strength impact the model.
The data was collected from 383 researchers who are working in the universities of Taiwan. According to the results, we found that the elders, male researchers, and high research funding academicians, are significant positive characteristics to all three performances. In addition, the researchers with better academia reputation are also positively related to the academic performance. Besides, the researcher who has higher position status, stronger motivation of obtaining resource, awarded, and managerial position will positively affect the educational performance. For the third output, commercial performance, the engineering school researchers have better achievements, compared with Business and Medicine school researchers. Moreover, the commercial performance can be positively related by the characteristics as higher position status, awarded, high research production, managerial position, and stronger motivation of obtaining resource.
At the end, stronger social tie strengthens the positive relation between highly-research-producing researchers and their academic performance, and the commercial performance. However, stronger social tie strengthens negative relation between the researchers who had prior industrial experience and their educational performance.
