This study explores the impact of institutional pressure for environmental sustainability on innovation performance in enterprises, specifically examining the moderating roles of corporate environmental responsiveness and organizational absorptive capacity. Utilizing regression and process analysis, the research investigates how institutional pressures, encompassing governmental regulations and societal expectations, drive both product and process innovation. The findings demonstrate that institutional pressures significantly enhance process innovation, contributing to operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
However, the influence on product innovation is contingent upon the organization’s absorptive capacity and the responsiveness of top management to environmental sustainability. High absorptive capacity amplifies the positive effects of institutional pressures on product innovation, while excessive focus on sustainability by senior management may constrain product innovation. This study underscores the complex interplay between regulatory compliance, environmental responsibility, and innovation outcomes, offering strategic insights for firms striving to balance sustainability with competitive advantage in dynamic markets.
