This study investigates the impact of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) participation on green innovation in the renewable energy sector, utilising patent activity as a measure. The research utilises regression models to analyse data from publicly traded companies in eight countries or regions (Canada, China, Denmark, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Korea, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States) from 2019 to 2022. The data includes ESG information from the Thomson Reuters ASSET4 database in Refinitiv and patent counts from the United States Patent and Trademarks Office (USPTO).
The findings indicate a direct correlation between better ESG scores and a rise in patent applications, implying that resilient ESG procedures stimulate creativity. The study additionally reveals that Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) and Net-Metering regulations have a favourable impact on the connection between ESG involvement and innovation.
The study emphasises the necessity for governments to provide assistance for the integration of ESG and promote strong and dynamic innovation ecosystems. This study also enhances the comprehension of the intricate relationship between ESG practices, governmental legislation, and sustainable advancements in the renewable energy industry.
