The components of the Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display (TFT-LCD) account for 60%~70% of its total cost. Facing the fierce competition of panel plants in Japan and Korea, panel plants in Taiwan make great efforts to reduce the cost in order to improve their competition. Therefore, panel plants in Taiwan, such as AUO, CMO and Innolux all request their vendors or suppliers to implement the Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) policy. To be more precise, suppliers should replenish the demand for the components to panel plants in time, and the payment is made according to the actual demand.
The lead time of the replenishment for Driver IC is the longest among the other components of TFT-LCD. Moreover, the demand of Driver IC is boosted due to the increase in the shipping quantity of the TFT-LCD panels in recent years and the customer’s preference for high-resolution screens leading to TFT-LCD Televisions with high resolution, the mainstream product in the market. Accordingly, one of panel plants and Driver IC suppliers is set as the subject of the research, and the research paper will discuss the variance of each important parameter including the mean demand, the residual demand variance, the autocorrelation in demand, replenishments per period, and the lead time based on the supply chain management model, the VMI model developed by Yao et al. (2007), and also added the cost model in analysis. After VMI is implemented, how it influences the inventory cost for the panel plant and the Driver IC supplier is analyzed and the significance of VMI is explained. The study provides a good approach to find out the most suitable parameter compound and other noticeable factors through Taguchi Method, which can be applied while the industry is making VMI-related decisions and policies.
