This study aims to explore the effects of comedy on Asian Americans with intergenerational cultural dissonance (ICD). Asian Americans are currently the third largest immigrant group in the US, and are estimated to surpass Hispanics around 2050 (Pew Research Center, 2021). As a result of this growth, intergenerational cultural dissonance (ICD) is prone to increase alongside. In fact, ICD is so widespread in immigrant households that it is considered a typical experience (Choi et al., 2008). In addition, it was found that family conflict, particularly parent-child conflict, is a significant risk factor for a child's mental health (Formoso et al., 2000). To explore this social issue, the research motivation was raised to identify the impact of media research and humor studies on this ICD situation. First, one of the three major theories in humor studies, the relief theory, proposes that humor can help release suppressed emotions and thoughts (Romero & Pescosolido, 2008). Multiple studies have also shown that the act of laughing can benefit the human body, providing many positive effects including muscle relaxation, fighting infections, helping ventilation (Fry, W., 1992), and even elevating pain thresholds (Dunbar et al., 2012). Comedy has also been said to be a natural cure for depression and those who are more inclined to use coping humor consistently have lower levels of depression (Attardo, S., 2014).
The research design records the effects of comedy on Asian Americans who have gone through ICD in the past and identifies the outcomes that humor brings to this topic. Three comedic videos based on interview findings and multiple theories of humor on the topic of Asian American culture were created using the comedy from different theories. During the evaluation phase, these videos were shown to three selected participants, and in-depth interviews were conducted to observe the difference in emotions and feelings towards their experiences based on the CHIME framework of personal recovery (Piat et al., 2017). The findings from this study discovered specific relationships between the participants’ feelings and emotions and the comedic content.
