隨著電子科技的發展，人們對於家庭自動化系統的要求亦隨之增長，以往的遠端操作介面多半是以電話線網路建構語音系統來操作，更新一代的是利用WAP手機來達到遠端遙控。但這些解決方案對現代人來說皆有其不足，語音系統的控制效率低，遠比不上一目了然的控制介面；手機的螢幕小，對於控制介面的功能亦多限制(而且手機市場的競爭激烈，3G時代的來臨，WAP手機並未顯現其絕對競爭優勢。)
然而計算機平台演進下最新的產物「PDA」提供了我們一個很好的解決方案，本系統利用PDA短、小、輕、薄的特性，有足夠的空間顯示完善功能的使用者介面，還有手機一樣有著可以隨身攜帶的優勢。將PDA藉著手機或是利用無線網路卡無線上網和家中PC溝通，並整合遠端上網PC和家中PC溝通，再透過家中PC扮演控管家電的中央處理器控管家中家電網路，即可達到無遠弗屆的控制。如此一來成功地整合了「無線通訊網路」、「網際網路」、和「家電控制網路」於此系統，功能完整、友善的使用者介面，更強大了家庭自動化系統的實用性。

With the development of electronics, the requirements of home automation are going to be more comprehensive. In the past, remote control via voice response by telephone could satisfy most users. Recently, the WAP cell phone takes the place of traditional remote control and brings home automation to a new age—mobile control age. Obviously, there are some weaknesses in the systems we mentioned above. The remote control via telephone is not an effective way, because users could not know clearly at a glance the functions of the system. The WAP cell phone has few spaces to display information and does not offer users the appropriate control panel board.
PDA, the smallest calculating machine so far, provides a pretty well solution for us. PDA has the advantages of small volume, handy shape and great ability. Most important of all, it gets enough space for graphical user interface and it can be on line by cell phone. In our system, we use on line PDA to contact with the PC that controls all the appliances on the network for electric appliances at home. Because both of PDA and cell phone are handy for users, it is a most effective and convenient way to combine both of them. People can “control their home” any time anywhere they want. We successfully integrate wireless communication, Internet, network for electric appliances with this system.
