People with disabilities cannot finish most of the simple task in their daily lives independently due to their poor physical abilities. The ability of making their own decisions, which is an important indicator for life quality, will even diminished as time goes by. Therefore, Sunshine Auxiliary Devices Research Group decided to develop a set of assistive environmental monitoring and control system, which is demand-oriented and capable of assistive multi-agent system, to help the disabled to operate home appliances by themselves. Assistive environmental monitoring and control system developed in this research are used to control electrical appliances and environmental monitoring. A low-cost wireless communication, ZigBee, is used to construct the network connection, and this system contains five major parts: (1) electrical appliance control; (2) automatic device control; (3) environmental monitoring; (4) security monitoring; (5) human machine interface. The system is then imported for a spinal cord injury. The client participated in both intervention period and maintenance period. Experimental and questionnaire results show that the purpose design meet the needs of the client, and he also agreed that assistive environmental monitoring and control system did help him to be more independent in his daily life, together with decreasing the heavy workloads of the caregivers.
