The measurement of animal behavior plays a critical role in the research on physiology, psychology, pharmacology, and the establishment of various behavior models in medical science. A well-designed measurement system for animal behavior will not only lower the complexity of an experiment, but also offer more accurate and multiple representative measurement parameters, increase the efficiency and reliability of an experiment and decrease the waste of experiment resources.
In the first part of this thesis, we present the construction of a measurement system for animal behavior, which is combined with the infrared matrix and the ultrasound to measure the animal locomotor and vibratory respectively, and transfer the measured signal into PC as series data format so that it can be displayed and saved. After the experiment, the analysis software programmed by LabVIEW can be used immediately to compute ten parameters of locomotor, seven parameters of stereotypy, three parameters of vibratory, and the change situation of these behavior parameters with every ten minutes. In addition, this software will save analysis results as text files for further statistics.
In the second part of this thesis, it provides a new type combined measurement system for animal behavior, an integrated system with image locating and vibration sense. In the aspect of measuring the vibratory behavior, it is applied with an accelerometer (Analog Devices ADXL202JE), which is fixed on the animal's body to measure its vibration directly. This accelerometer processes a theory resolution of 9.0mG, so that it's able to measure the very light vibration. The measured signal is also transferred as series data format into PC and saved. In the aspect of analysis software, it offer almost fully the same parameters of animal behavior as parameters offered by the above combined measurement system for animal behavior by slightly modify the software in the first part. It benefits the comparison between these two systems. Furthermore, the definition of some animal behavior parameters will be a little changed in order to fit the difference of characteristics of new type system.
Finally, this paper will compare the characteristics and limitation of these two systems according to the results of animal experiments with different kind of drugs injected. It proves that the new type measurement system can provide more strong ability of recognizing animal behaviors and it meets the goal of using the simplest method to obtain the most accurate and meaningful measurement.
