Taiwan's craft industry is deeply influenced by the Mingei movement proposed by Sôetsu. It significantly influences modern people’s life style. However, due to changes in the external environment, the advantage of Taiwan's craft industry sharply decreased. Craft industry faced with the crisis of transformation. At this moment, Taiwan's craft industry has been categorized into the cultural and creative industries in 2008, which is undoubtedly an important milestone. By adding cultural, creative and life elements, it aims to find a new way out. National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Center, developed the "Yii" brand which transforms traditional craft by modern design and brings craft into daily life. Through the interdisciplinary collaboration between craftsmen and designers, it breaks the boundaries of traditional craft and gives the significance of modern products, exploring new possibilities. Among the modern craft products in the Yii brand, it is found that the meaning of many craft products is different from the traditional ones. It partly realized the idea of using meaning innovation to bring craft into the modern lifestyle. However, scholars seldom discuss the phase of meaning change of craft products. And there is also few research related to the process of the interdisciplinary collaboration of craft products. Therefore, this research aims (1)to identify profile of designer and craftsman; (2)to clarify the type of meaning innovation in craft industry; (3)to explore the pattern of interdisciplinary collaboration between craftsman and designer; and (4)to develop meaning innovation process and operational strategy of craft products under the circumstance of designer as interpreter.
Based on the literature review and research objectives, this research adopts qualitative methods, multiple case study, and in-depth interview. According to interview data from nine interviewees of craft discipline and design discipline, this research presents that in Taiwan’s craft industry, it is essential to put more efforts on the education of cultural context. Only if the foundation is stable, it is possible to conduct efficient meaning innovation. Another key point of meaning innovation is to make craft get closer to life. The more craft gets closer to life, the more development we can make. Regarding of interdisciplinary collaboration, even if the line between craftsmen and designers is getting blurred, they still have their respective characteristics. Furthermore, this research proposes three patterns of interdisciplinary collaboration. According to the cultural context of craft, meaning innovation process and operational strategy in each phase are presented, especially for craft in Taiwan. It is hoped to provide some insights and guideline for craftsmen or designers who are interested in the interdisciplinary collaboration as a reference. Furthermore, increase the possibility of meaning innovation in the interdisciplinary collaboration between craftsmen and designers.
