With the promotion of bicycling and marked increase in activity taking place in Taiwan, both private and public enterprise, as well as bicyclists themselves, have vested interests in understanding what bicyclists feel best facilitate and best assure a safe and enjoyable bicycle trip, be it across town or around the island.
While bicycling is different than riding a motorcycle or driving a car, bicyclists do share similar desires and challenges. Bicyclists of all types, and in all locations, want to enjoy and maximize their experience on the road, and when they get tired, hungry and thirsty and in need of help, they seek rest and service facilities.
Using experimental design conjoint analysis, this research explored bicyclist preferences for hypothetical bicycling-oriented rest and service facilities in Taiwan, dubbed in this study as bike stops, with regard to the attributes: location, safety, services, amenities, and the time is takes a rider to reach the bike stop facility.
The majority of respondents were recreational and touring bicyclists, followed by commuting and off-road mountain bicyclists. Results found overall bicyclist preference for bike stop facilities to be located in national scenic areas with secure inside bike storage, self-service maps and tourist information, gourmet coffee, and to take less than five minutes to reach. However, there were significant differences between and among respondent segmentation based on socio-demographics as well as bicyclist type and bicycling-related characteristics.
