Since the era of knowledge economy began, there have been two extremely important issues for corporations: knowledge management, and innovation. Companies that can acquire and utilize knowledge always equip themselves with the ability of innovation. Thus, it is of extreme importance for organizations to realize how to catch , to create, to share, and even to store knowledge. Moreover, it is also critical to understand how knowledge could be compatible with corporations' management and operation systems, which eventually leads to constant innovation.
Many researchers and scholars suggest that knowledge management will result in positive impacts on innovation performances only when it can match business strategies. By using the case study method to investigate the electronics and information industries in Taiwan, this study attempts to analyze the differentiation and correlation among business strategy, knowledge management, and innovation performance.
Based on the theory of knowledge management by Nonaka &Takeuchi(1995) and Davenport(1998), the theory of business strategy by Miles & Snow(1978), and the theory of innovation performance by Utterback(1994),Liu (1992) and Yien (1997), this study built up its research framework, obtained variables, and then proposed the hypotheses. Five hundred and fifty questionnaire samples were issued (with one hundred and eight usable copies returned, and a 19.6% returning rate). Statistical methods such as ANOVA, canonical correlation analysis, and regression analysis were conducted.
The results of this study suggested the following:
1. The characteristics of organizations show an distinguishing difference among their
abilities to knowledge management, business strategy, and innovation performances.
2. There existed close connections between the choices of business strategies and knowledge management were found.
3. Knowledge management and business strategy had an significant influence on
innovation performances.
The findings of this study suggests that companies should develop their abilities in knowledge management, and try to make the best match between business strategy and knowledge management, which will bring effective innovation performances.
