This research presumes historical comics as a public historical practice aiming to disseminate historical knowledge and engage the public in historical imagination and discussion. Within the evolving creative content industry, history and culture are commercialized and all kinds of popular cultural forms have become the prime channels of historical consumption. Meanwhile, comics have emerged as vehicles for popular historical narratives in Taiwan after the long absence of local subjectivity. This study integrates cultural and historical translation into public history practices. While its production is beyond the conventional historiography, it has a closer relationship with the public and has become the main channel for public consumption of history. Thus, this study emphasizes the formation of historical consciousness through both fictional and factual narratives. Recognizing the need to align with broad audience preferences and commercial considerations, it highlights the responsibility of both creative and content industries in conveying historical consciousness and shaping resulting identities. Emphasizing the societal engagement of historians, this study explores the utilization of comics to translate Taiwan's cultural and historical aspects into the public sphere, specifically examining the "Creative Comic Collection" (CCC) operated by the Academia Sinica.
This exploratory research investigates how comics operate within the CCC framework—an interdisciplinary partnership across digital librarianship (digital archives), public history, and comics studies. Concentrating on the creation phase of the historical comics, the research examines (1) creative collaboration, (2) graphic narrative strategies based on their comic expression and treatment of the histories, and (3) core values in three selected historical comics. Interviews with comic artists and CCC editors offer insights into their practices and perspectives. By referencing foreign historical comics and the criteria of "comic as historiography," this study aims to explore comics' potential spectrum, serving as edutainment, a historiographical tool mutually beneficial dialogue with the scholarly accounts, or a method of public history beyond mere entertainment.
