The Government of Swaziland declared a national drought disaster on 18 February 2016 in response to extend El Nino-induced drought conditions dating back to 2014. The drought resulted in a severe decline in crop production and affected about 350,000 people’s livelihood. This research is aimed to explore the effectiveness of disaster management in Swaziland, especially in terms of response effectiveness towards drought disaster at regional level in 2016. The author applied qualitative research method including 10 interviewees and phone discussions involving 5 key informants from both local and national levels. This study revealed 6 research finding as well as 6 suggestions and the author came up with more suggestion that are not from the findings in trying to strengthen the research. It was found that the information processing prior and during the disaster was insufficient for stakeholders to make rational decisions for response. The scarce internal resources, lack of collaboration among stakeholders, poor policies and absence of disaster management at regional level were the main reasons for the poorly functioning disaster management system. Suggestions that were made in improving the response effectiveness was through improving the availability and diversity of early warning information, establishing a local resource fund, modifying external assistance, creating a regular working commission and enhancing the networking among stake holders.
