The Smart Home Lighting Environment is one application of ambient intelligence, which is the combination of wireless sensor networks and lighting with embedded behavior controlling functions triggered by location aware signals to accomplish the scenario of automatic lighting services. The main purpose of smart home lighting environment is to help provide comfort life for family members. Therefore, the services should be provided at right time, right place and without being felt annoyed by users. This thesis adopts the Received Signal Strength (RSS) techniques and ZigBee wireless sensor network to implement the application services of smart home lighting environment. It provides family members with different light brightness according to their presences at the particular time and in the particular place. Furthermore, it can be integrated into related services of ambient intelligence to achieve an intelligent and friendly living environment.
Being aware of the factors that affect the energy consuming, package collisions, and received signal strength on wireless sensor network, this thesis also studies the issue of collision with package during the transmission process over wireless networks, which imposes performance impact upon the wireless sensor networks not only in the aspect of operation but also in the aspect of power consumption. To address the above issue, the mechanism of Radio Signal Strength Division Multiple Access/Collision Avoid (RSSDMA/CA) is proposed to reduce the demotion of efficiency in system operation incurred from package collisions. The RSSDMA/CA mechanism is extended from CSMA/CA (Carrie Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoid). It works by determining package transmission route from a node based on the received signal strength (RSS) upon joining the network. From the results of experiments on collisions of package transmission, it can be observed that the RSSDMA/CA mechanism can effectively avoid the collision of packages under high transmission flow and operates with more efficiency than the commonly used CSMA/CA mechanism. It therefore helps to achieve the goal of stabilizing operation and of improving the performance of smart home lighting environment.
