With technological advancement and the widespread of the pandemic have rapidly enabled employees to experience a new way of future work, namely work from anywhere. To deal with rapid change, curiosity is a strong attribute to facilitate an individual in adjusting to a new environment. From the regulatory focus theory perspective, this study would like to decode the role of joyous exploration and deprivation sensitivity as elements of curiosity on remote workers’ job satisfaction in the context of work from anywhere. Integrating empowerment in labor process theory, this study also examines whether the work from anywhere benefits or depletes work engagement and job satisfaction. To conduct a cross-national study, which is represented by 4,556 sample sizes, a questionnaire-based survey was distributed across different countries to examine the research model of this study.
Our study highlights that work from anywhere and curiosity play significant roles in work engagement and remote workers’ job satisfaction. The result shows that joyous exploration and deprivation sensitivity are positively related to work engagement. Thus, work engagement can meditate the positive relationship between curiosity, namely joyous exploration and deprivation sensitivity, and job satisfaction. Besides, the direct effect illustrates the positive relationship between joyous exploration and remote worker's job satisfaction, yet deprivation sensitivity is negatively related to remote worker's job satisfaction. In addition, this study also visualizes that working from anywhere can strengthen a higher remote worker’s happiness at the workplace. Finally, the conclusion, contributions, and future research directions are discussed.
