This thesis explored the strategic management of operational resources within the Taiwanese craft beer industry, focusing on the dual phenomena of competition and cooperation, termed coopetition. The objective was to uncover how Taiwan Head Brewers Brewing and Taihu Brewing navigate this complex landscape, leveraging both competitive and cooperative strategies to survive and explore opportunities.
Employing a qualitative research methodology, this study conducted in-depth case analyses of the selected breweries. The research involved formal interviews with key industry personnel, observations at significant craft beer events, and thematic analysis of the data gathered. Through this comprehensive approach, the study revealed the dynamic interplay of coopetition strategies that these breweries engaged into managing operational resources effectively within their value networks.
The findings highlighted several key mechanisms, resource sharing among competitors to enhance operational efficiency, safeguarded resources to maintain competitive advantage, and cooperation for survival and growth through mutual commitments and collaborative relationships. In a competitive market, firms were expected to keep resources to maintain a competitive edge. However, this finding showed that resource sharing can enhance collaboration to thrive in a challenging market environment. These strategies enabled breweries to not only survive but thrive by optimizing their resource management practices and enhancing market reach.
In conclusion, the thesis demonstrated that strategic resource management through coopetition provided a significant role for value creation in the Taiwanese craft beer industry, offering insights into how businesses can navigate both competitive threats and cooperative opportunities for sustainable development.
