In modern platform-based ecosystems, companies like brand manufacturers act as complementors by leveraging platform technologies to innovate and develop complementary assets. These assets drive innovation and allow complementors to capture more value, but platform providers often control the development of technology and standards, creating a power imbalance. To address this imbalance, establishing bidirectional dependency is crucial. This mutual dependency fosters collaboration, enhances complementarity, reduces power disparities, and enables complementors to gain greater decision-making rights. Brand manufacturers rely on platform resources for defining core product concepts and guiding structural design decisions, and their access to these resources significantly affects their decision-making power within the ecosystem.

The study shows that maintaining high complementarity is essential for sustaining competitiveness in platform-based ecosystems. If complementarity is not reinforced, the ecosystem risks stagnation, limiting innovation. Complementors must develop specialized assets that are uniquely valuable to the platform provider, strengthening their influence over product development and decision-making processes. Using resource dependence theory, the study examines how differences in platform resource acquisition impact decision-making rights in the LCD television industry. It reveals that those with greater access to platform resources gain more influence, while those with limited access remain under the control of platform providers. The research highlights the importance of mutual dependency and complementarity in forming strong partnerships, emphasizing that specialized complementary assets enable complementors to enhance their decision-making power and position within the ecosystem.
