  • Manufacturing offshoring is one of the most popular phenomenon of 21st manufacturing as firms tried to outsource production activities to other low-wage developing countries in order to achieve some competitive advantages. However, besides the opportunity to enhance company’s cost position, the risks of manufacturing offshoring are also evident. The possibility of firms to stay in their home country or to reshore back have also received a great deal of attention. In this study, we will investigate the relationship between business competitive strategies and manufacturing strategies as well as testing whether manufacturing strategies have an impact on manufacturing’s location decisions whether and where the production is moving, expanding and contracting around the world. An analysis of 138 manufacturing companies shows that there is a significant and positive relationship between business competitive strategy and manufacturing strategies of cost, delivery, flexibility and quality. Moreover, manufacturing locations decision can be predicted by manufacturing strategies factors, particularly controlling for firm’s characteristics. Results suggest that competing based on quality, flexibility and delivery can predict the manufacturing location decisions. However, firms who focus on quality and flexibility are more likely to locate their manufacturing plants in home country.
