This study addresses the competitive dynamics perspective, and specifically, the Awareness-Motivation-Capability (AMC) perspective, to examine the associations between the characteristics of a firm’s allied targets and its competitors’ responding speed in Taiwan mobile communications industry. By collecting data with a structured content analysis approach, a large sample retrieved from the United Knowledge database (聯合知識庫) was utilized to scrutinize the hypothetical relationships. Statistical results show the relationships between a firm’s allied target’s size, aggression, and capability to attack and its competitors’ responding speed are positively correlated. More importantly, allied target’s aggression indeed has significant implications for a firm’s competitors’ responding speed.
This paper represents a first new step for extending the competitive dynamics perspective to the strategic alliance settings. Research results remind business managers of developing a “dynamic” way of strategic and competitive thinking while making strategic alliances decisions. Limitations and future directions are discussed as well.
