This creation-based thesis aims to explore the attractiveness factors of artists' books through in-depth interviews and the creative process, delving into the appeal of this distinctive art form. Artists' books, as a medium, take on the form of a book to serve as an artistic expression, using publishing as an artistic practice. Creators hold complete control over the structure, content, materials, and printing of the book. Their flexibility and creative potential make artists' books a beloved medium among creators, maintaining a significant presence in the art world from the modern art movements of the early 20th century to today. Their portability and ease of dissemination have further cultivated a growing community of enthusiasts.
Books require active engagement, prompting readers to physically touch, open, and explore their contents. The interactivity and sense of participation are unique to artists' books. These books transcend the role of passive reading material to become interactive artworks that foster engagement with readers. This interaction sparks creativity in readers, placing them in a shared context with the creator. Only by personally engaging with the work can readers uncover its layers and grasp the messages conveyed, reflecting the inseparable relationship between creator, book, and reader.
This study examines artists' books from the reader's perspective, employing Miryoku Engineering through tools such as the Evaluation Grid Method (EGM) and Hayashi’s Quantification Theory Type I (QTTI). Results reveal that tactility, unique storytelling approaches, and the interplay between design and content elicit feelings of intimacy, uniqueness, and anticipation in readers. Guided by these identified attractiveness factors, a new artist's book was created to test the study's hypotheses. This book embodies the creator’s artistic vision, presenting distinct insights into visual and sensory expression. Further validation confirmed the utility of Miryoku Engineering, demonstrating its role in enhancing the creative process by acting as both a guide and a source of inspiration for artists.
This thesis aims to provide a substantive and practical perspective on the study of artists' books, emphasizing their core appeal while offering insights for future research. By integrating theoretical exploration with creative practice, this research seeks to deepen the understanding and highlight the unique value of artists' books.
