In today’s competitive business environment, firms must adopt differentiated strategies to maintain long-term advantages. This study investigates whether CEOs with higher managerial ability are more likely to implement unique strategies. Prior research suggests that firms tend to follow herd-like, conservative decisions during periods of high economic policy uncertainty. However, uncertainty also presents opportunities to outperform competitors. Therefore, this study further examines whether capable CEOs are more likely to propose distinctive strategies under greater economic policy uncertainty. Using a sample of firms from the ExecuComp database between 2001 and 2022, the results show that higher CEO ability is positively associated with strategic uniqueness. However, economic policy uncertainty does not moderate this relationship. Capable CEOs are consistently able to develop unique strategies that may enhance competitive advantage, regardless of the level of uncertainty.
