This paper investigates how the quantity and age of the knowledge that firms search affects how innovative they are. First, I make a distinction between two areas of the firm’s search resources: the search of its own knowledge-base and the search of its competitors’ knowledge. Then two seemingly contradictory propositions are examined at the two firm’s search resources: (1) old knowledge hurts by making innovation activities obsolete, and, (2) old knowledge helps because it is more reliable, thereby promoting innovation. Results based on longitudinal data on 16 large-size TFT-LCD panel manufactories. We find intra-firm and intra-industry knowledge hurt innovation, and searching intra-industry knowledge age is taking an inverted U-shape related to innovation.
