This study aims to examine the relationship between general competency and career opportunities among college students in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The motivations of this study are as follows: (1) This study examines how the lack of general competencies affects job stability among college graduates in Vietnam’s evolving labor market; (2) Investigating the relationship between general competency and career opportunities will provide insights for curriculum reform and enhance graduates' employability; (3) Analyzing students' general competency in Ho Chi Minh City will offer valuable data for nationwide higher education and labor market development. The study sample consisted of 320 students selected through purposive sampling from ten higher education institutions, including three public universities, three public colleges, two private universities, and two private colleges. Students enrolled in political, governmental, and military institutions were excluded from the sample. The gathered data were examined utilizing descriptive statistics, independent sample t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The main findings of this study are as follows: (1) College students in Ho Chi Minh City demonstrate a moderate level of general competency; (2) College students in Ho Chi Minh City perceive their career opportunities at a moderate level; (3) Significant differences exist in general competency among students with different demographic backgrounds; (4) Significant differences exist in career opportunities among students with different demographic backgrounds; (5) General competency exhibit a strong positive correlation with career opportunities and possess predictive power. This study aims to examine the relationship between general competency and career opportunities among college students in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
