With the rapid growth of Podcast listening volume in the past two years (SoundOn, 2021), more and more research is also devoted to podcasts. Previous literature investigating podcasts mainly focused on the motivation of podcast listeners. This study aims to find out the voice characteristics of the producer and the psychological needs of the listener that affect listening intention, including speech rate, voice pitch, voice gender, and especially the mediating effect of affiliation needs and epistemic curiosity between proximity and listening intention.
This study collects data from 3 experiments. We construct our stimuli from a script for a book introduction. Experiment 1 modifies the voice pitch (high/low) and speech rate (fast/slow) to ensure that the stimuli sound natural. In Experiment 2, We use a two-factor mixed design of speech rate (fast/slow) and voice pitch (high/low) to make sure that the content of the questionnaire items is stable and that there are significant differences in the manipulation of variables such as speed and pitch of proximity. In Experiment 3, we used a 2 x 2 x 2 between-subject factorial design to prove that the effect of the speech rate(fast/slow), voice gender (male/female), and voice pitch (high/low) could affect the proximity. In addition, experiment 3 also proves the relationship between proximity, affiliation needs, epistemic curiosity, and listening intention.
The results of the study show: (1) The proximate sense of the listener is significantly influenced by voice characteristics. (2) The proximity significantly affects listeners' epistemic curiosity and affiliation needs. Moreover, both of the two affect listening intention. (3) In the section on mediating effects, affiliation needs somewhat mediate proximity and listening intention, whereas epistemic curiosity has no mediating impact.
