Equity crowdfunding in the United States enters a new phase in 2016, with the Title III of JOBS Act that lets small investors to partake an equity crowdfunding campaign. Prior studies have analyzed what factors affecting the success of a campaign; however, this study is the first to analyze the effect of political preference to equity crowdfunding campaign, both the initiation and the success of the campaign. This study analyzes the equity crowdfunding campaign in the USA under Title III of JOBS Act, which starts from 2016, up until the latest data in 2019. This study found that political preference affects the crowdfunding campaign in the USA, in which states that won by Democrat have positive effects on campaign initiation. Surprisingly, the political preference seems to be ineffective in determining the campaign success. The state R&D expenditure also found to have adverse effect on campaign success. Furthermore, the effect of state R&D expenditure is strengthened if the state happens to be a Democrat state.
