“Mukbang” is a video that the broadcast jockey eats a large amount of food while narrating and interacting with their audience (McCarthy, 2017). In recent years, it is shown that mukbang can let people feel pleasant through the sound of chewing and swallowing. Furthermore, people can also relieve pressure and reduce loneliness while watching mukbang. However, the motivation of watching mukbang as a compensatory behavior have not been confirmed by empirical research. Hence, this study aims to explore whether the dissatisfaction of basic psychological needs will affect people to watch Mukbang as a compensatory behavior in order to feel pleasant.
By applying regression analysis, the results show that competence dissatisfaction has positive and significant effects on compensatory behavior, however autonomy dissatisfaction and relatedness dissatisfaction do not have positive and significant effects on compensatory behavior. Compensatory behavior and media richness have positive and significant effects on satisfaction, while satisfaction also has positive and significant effects on the intention of rewatching.
