  • Floods are among the most common and devastating natural disasters, significantly impacting communities worldwide. Understanding how secondary school students perceive flood risks, as well as their level of preparedness is critical for developing effective educational programs and mitigation strategies. This study aims to assess the perception of flood risks and the preparedness level among secondary school students in Mchikichini Secondary School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It seeks to identify the factors influencing their awareness and preparedness, as well as propose recommendations for improving flood education in schools. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 155 Secondary School students in Mchikichin Secondary School, Tanzania. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that assessed students' awareness of flood risks, their personal experiences with floods, worry, perceived vulnerability, and preparedness measures. Statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics and regression analysis, were performed to identify significant predictors of flood risk perception and preparedness. The results indicate that while a majority of students are aware of the basic concepts of flood risks, their preparedness levels are relatively low. Key factors influencing flood risk perception included previous flood experience, exposure to flood education programs, and socioeconomic status. Students who were in high classes and participated in school-based flood education activities had significantly higher levels of preparedness. The results emphasize the need for targeted educational programs to improve flood preparedness among secondary school students. Integrating flood risk education into the school curriculum could improve students' knowledge and preparedness, ultimately contributing to community resilience. This study underscores the importance of improving flood risk perception and preparedness among secondary school students. By addressing the gaps in awareness and preparedness, educational interventions can play a critical role in mitigating the impacts of future flood events.
