The rapid development of technologies revolutionizes business operation in the emerging digital context. The platform-based technology ecosystem is proving superior to traditional, vertically integrated systems in many businesses domain because of greater “generativity” —the ecosystem’s capacity to foster innovation from autonomous, heterogeneous firms. Based on the literature on generativity focuses on the platform owner while we uncover what is known about the generativity of an organization and how to build it. Considering the construct of generativity is increasing, this research aims to provide the perspective of an organization, especially the mechanisms driving generativity.

In this study, we discuss the ability of an organization including big data analytics capabilities, organizational agility, and relationship of network partners to explore the generativity operating in new ways for innovation. Moreover, understanding the organization would participate in different kinds of entrepreneurial ecosystems, we also take the platform openness into consideration. To conclude, we have carried out an empirical study with an internet survey platform and collected an effective sample size of 255 for analysis. The result has shown that the capability of big data analytics, agility, and the strong relationship of network partners reinforce the positive effect of the generativity construction. Meanwhile, such generativity could make greater innovation performance while the platform openness couldn’t mediate the relationship between though. Our findings have extended the discussion of generativity in the interactive nature of innovations in a digital ecosystem.
