This research focuses on the impact of company’s technological resources, and the effect on a company’s innovation. There are two objectives of this research. One is to understand how technological research and development within a company and within an industry affects the performance of a company’s innovation. The second objective is to understand how research and development within and outside a company’s specialty affects the performance of the company’s innovation. The study was done by collecting patent data from the top four pharmaceutical companies in the world, and analyzing their patent data by correlation and panel data analyses. There are three major conclusions that can be drawn from this research. First, a company should focus on technological innovation within a company’s specialty. This conclusion is based on the observation that a company tends to focus on knowledge collection within their main technologies. However, technological innovation outside a company’s expertise requires external support of knowledge collection and related technologies. The second conclusion of this research is that if companies belonging to an industry with a high density of research and development continue to focus their research and development on their expertise, the technological innovation within those companies can be more efficient. The third conclusion of this research is that in non-drug manufacture’s research, companies need external support from different companies and different fields of technology; thus, technological innovation outside of a non-drug manufacture’s research can be more efficient.
