Chinese Medicine has been developed for over three thousand years and provides a non-invasive method of diagnosis based on the pulse. As mentioned in the classic Chinese Medicine work, the general pulse types can be classified into 28 kinds based on eight elements which are depth, rate, width, length, strength, smoothness, stiffness and regularity. The researchers in Luo’s laboratory at National Cheng Kung University were able to get readings of three different pulse namely: normal pulse, taut pulse and slippery pulse using Bi-Sensing Pulse Detection Instrument (BSPDI) which gives a 3D pulse mapping (3DPM). Fourier analysis is a tool that is used to represent any signal in frequency domain. Here, we have extended the fourier analysis from one dimension to multi-dimension so as to capture the structural features of the 3DPM in the spatial domain along with the temporal domain. The multi-dimensional fourier analysis has been used to break down the three pulse types into simpler signals so as to devise a method to distinguish the different pulse types objectively.
