Oral cancer is the sixth causes of death in 2006 among the ten major malignancies in Taiwan. Every year it makes thousands people die. Bioimpedance technology is a kind of impedance measurement technology, and has great potential in clinical applications. Due to the property of tissues, the impedance may vary with the frequency of measuring signal. Many tissues show the different electrical properties between the normal and malignant states. Thus, the multi-frequency impedance measurement plays an important role in characterizing the electrical property of tissues. This study has developed a set of multi-frequency bio-impedance measuring system that provides oral tissue impedance measurement on an embedded system platform. Its three major parts combine: first, hardware design; second, software design; and third, assistive device design. Hardware design contains two parts which are: (1)Embedded System Platform, and (2)measurement module. Its software functions contain three major parts which are: (1)Board Support Package(BSP)configuration, and (2)measurement parameter settings, and (3)data acquisition. The performances for the developed system are summarized as follows. The total harmonic distortion(THD) is below 0.3%. The experimental results of bioimpedances are also compared with the Agilent 4263B LCR meter. For the standard resistor measurement, the maximal percentage difference between the proposed system and LCR meter is within 2%. For the oral tissue measurement, the experimental results of bioimpedances have also good reproducibility in impedance measurements. This developed system provides more frequent point measurement than LCR meter, and combined with embedded system platform, it can perform analysis program in WinCE operation system that require touch panel screen and GUI control panel to reduces its complexity to operate.
