Aim: To develop the Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale (ESES) in Bahasa Indonesian version using cross-cultural adaptation approach and to evaluate its validity and reliability.
Method: This methodological study was conducted through four phases. In phase 1, the ESES was cross-culturally adapted into Bahasa Indonesian version through 6 steps including forward translation, synthesis of translated version, back translation, validation, cross-cultural validity and face validity. In phase 2, construct validity was performed through exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, convergent and discriminant validity. In phase 3, criterion validity was performed through predictive validity. In phase 4, test-retest reliability was performed to analyse the stability of the scale. The data were collected from University students of Muhammadiyah Malang, Indonesia from June to July 2018.
Result: Cross-cultural validity using content validity approach resulted in an excellent validity with 18-item of the scale. Face validity found the 18-item of the scale were totally understood. EFA found one, two and three factor were plausible models. Robust maximum likelihood and 5-fold cross-validation for CFA corroborated that the three factor with 16-item showed good model fit. The ICC of .95 and random distribution of Bland-Altman plot within limits of agreement indicated excellent reliability of the scale.
Conclusion: The ESES was cross-culturally adapted into Bahasa Indonesian version and showed a satisfactory of validity and reliability testing. However, this version was validated for university students. Further study need to validate this scale using different population in Indonesia.
Implication in practice: This research provides an important contribution to improve the measurement of exercise self-efficacy in the Indonesian young population.
