  • 中文與英文為不同的文字系統。中文使用意符文字系統(logographic writing system),而英文使用拼音文字系統(alphabetic writing system),相較於英文字的再認歷程,中文字的再認歷程可能涉及更多的整體處理過程。過去研究者使用字優效果與選擇性注意力失敗作為整體處理的指標,顯示中、英文字的再認歷程皆涉及整體處理。然而,由先前的研究方式無法確認個體是否處理所有的部件訊息,同時也無法區分出中、英文字再認歷程的差異。因此,本研究使用系統多因子技術(systems factorial technology)有系統地從訊息處理架構、終止原則、及處理容量的特性了解中、英文字再認歷程的差異。本研究預期倘若參與者使用整體處理的方式再認文字,應該觀察到平行處理、窮盡原則,以及相依的特性。本研究使用延遲配對作業,並操弄語言(中文、英文)與文字種類(真字、假字、非字)。實驗一與三針對處理容量進行探討;實驗二與三則針對處理架構與終止原則進行探討。實驗一分成且規則(AND rule,決策判斷需要所有部件訊息)與或規則(OR rule,決策判斷僅需部分部件訊息)探討處理容量,並發現英文字真字且規則的處理容量高於假字與非字,而非字或規則的處理容量高於真字與假字,支持字優效果。相對地,中文字且規則的處理容量在三種文字種類間並無差異,而真字或規則的處理容量高於假字與非字,展現與英文字完全不同的結果。實驗二與三探討處理歷程,結果顯示即便中英文字的處理容量不同,中英文字的處理歷程皆會隨著作業需求而改變,從平行自我終止處理轉換為平行窮盡與共同激發處理,且處理架構與終止原則並不會隨著文字種類而有太大差異。研究結果顯示不同的語言會影響部件訊息的處理效能,而處理架構與終止原則會隨著作業需求而有所改變,展現文字處理歷程的彈性。本研究以系統多因子技術說明文字再認歷程非必為整體處理,有助於往後文字相關研究的發展。

    This thesis investigated the perceptual processing on Chinese and English visual word recognition process. This study used the systems factorial technology (SFT) to invesitigate the differences between Chinese and English recognition process in the processing architecture, stopping rule (in Experiments 2 and 3), and processing capacity (in Experiments 1 and 3). A delayed matching task was condicted, and the language type (Chinese/English) and word type (non-word, pseudo-word, and word) were manipulated. Results showed that both Chinese characters and English words involve holistic processing in Experiment 1 but the language type and task rule interactd on the processing capacity, and no differences were observed between two languages for processing architecture and stopping rule in Experiments 2 and 3. We concluded that language type has a strong influence on processing capacity, whereas requirements of task have an influence on processing architecture and stopping rule.
