空間設計好比寫作一樣，在環境中書寫著空間的故事與意義。本論文是基於這樣的想法下所做的試探，探討空間寫作的可能性，並以篆刻做為建立設計方法的資源。

篆刻，在印面之內跌宕生姿，於方寸之內展現了時間的古樸和空間的渾厚。在印文中所表現「虛」與「實」的構成藝術，與空間中的「虛」、「實」異曲同工，而印章中的空間比一般建築平面圖所呈現的空間更加豐富，更有趣味。

論文的第一部份在探討如何釋放內蘊於印文內的空間，以萃取其中的空間文字。這需要一套有效的方法，從十個印文中藉由「轉譯」、「擷取」、「重組」的方式產生新的構成，再於其中萃取出五十三個「空間文字」。運用這些文字可用來進行建築尺度與都市尺度的空間書寫。

論文的第二部份是設計創作，以成功大學複合型社團活動中心與台南市會展中心規劃為對象，實際運用創造的空間文字進行寫作，同時檢討寫作中遇到的問題與挑戰。

Design can be viewed as writing, which tells story and reveals meanings in terms of space and form. Based on this view, the thesis is set to investigate the art of spatial writing by a method devised by systematic study from Chinese seal engraving.

The art of Chinese seal is featured by the rich compositions of the “void” and the “solid”, which are similar to that of architectural spaces in profound way. Therefore, the seal is inspiring for spatial design both as technical resource and aesthetic material.

The first part of this thesis is about building a language from seals. It takes three essential procedures: first, fuse a series of selected seal engravings into solid and void compositions; then, divide them into smaller parts that can be seen as individual words; at last, explore the semantic contents of each word by interpreting its volume and spatial relations from within and without. 53 spatial words are formulated as result.

The second part of the thesis consists of two design demonstrations. One is the Student Centre of National Cheng-Kung University at building level, the other is The Convention Center of Tainan city at urban level.
