The average manufacturing firm spends about 50% of its sale revenue on the purchases of goods and services. Furthermore, the process of traditional procurement system is lengthy and complicated. Therefore, how to simplify procurement process and reduce procurement cost has always been a key challenge for enterprises.
E-procurement is a new trend to apply for solving the procurement problems. This research investigated the correlation between e-procurement and supply chain performance. Moreover, this study probed into some important factors of partner relationship, information sharing, and supply chain integration within supply chain system, as well as their roles and correlations within the framework. The current study adopted qualitative method to do case studies with three manufacturing firms and the original research model and hypotheses were revised, based on the results of case studies. Followed by that, the study used quantitative method to confirm and verify research model.
The results revealed that e-procurement could promote information sharing and supply chain integration. Furthermore, information sharing was positively associated with partner relationship, supply chain integration and supply chain performance. The information sharing, therefore, played an important role in e-procurement system. In addition, partner relationship held different importance from industry to industry. Moreover, in some industries, price and quality are the most important issues. The results of case study showed that, partner relationship only supports e-procurement, supply chain integration, and supply chain performance partially. However, the results of statistical analysis showed that partner relationship was not significantly associated with e-procurement and supply chain integration, and by improving the partner relationship may promote supply chain performance. Although the results of case study indicated that supply chain integration was positively related to supply chain performance, there was no significant correlation found between both through statistical analysis. There might be two reasons. To build complete and perfect supply chain integration may also spend inestimable cost and the benefit is hard to measure. On the other hand, while the supplier’s communication performance is enhanced, the supplier’s operational performance is not affected.
