Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of table tennis intervention on wrist joint proprioception, haptic perception, and motor skills in children with a probable developmental coordination disorders.
Methods: Initially, 28 children aged 8 to 10 with developmental coordination disorders (including probable Developmental Coordination Disorder) were screened using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 (MABC-2) assessment tool. These participants were then divided into an experimental group of 14 children receiving a 12-week table tennis intervention and a control group of 14 children maintaining their regular activities. Before and after the intervention, three tools were used to assess both groups: (1) Employing a wrist bimanual manipulandum to conduct a psychophysical discrimination threshold testing, obtaining wrist position sense acuity thresholds. (2) Utilizing a set of haptic curvature blocks for a haptic detection task to obtain haptic sensitivity thresholds and conducting a haptic discrimination task to obtain haptic acuity thresholds. (3) Implementing the MABC-2 to assess manual dexterity, aiming & catching, and static and dynamic balance in the domains of motor performance. Data were analyzed statistically by ANCOVA.
Results: The experiment revealed that after a 12-week table tennis intervention, there was no significant difference in wrist joint proprioception acuity between the experimental group of children with suspected developmental coordination disorder and the control group (p = .955). However, there was an improvement in haptic sensitivity [F (1, 25) = 29.15, p < .001, η² = 0.538; pre-test vs. post-test = 7.70 ± 3.24 vs. 4.63 ± 2.38]. There was no significant difference in haptic acuity (p = .137). Regarding motor skills, there was no significant difference in manual dexterity between the experimental group and the control group (p = .836). However, significant differences were observed in throwing and catching skills [F (1, 25) = 9.12, p = .006, η² = 0.267], static and dynamic balance [F (1, 25) = 7.29, p = .012, η² = 0.226], and overall motor skills [F (1, 26) = 6.21, p < .05, η² = 0.193].
Conclusions: Table tennis can effectively enhance haptic sensitivity and certain motor function in children with a probable developmental coordination disorders.
