This study adopts a case study approach to examine Occidental Petroleum (Oxy) and its market positioning and competitive advantages in the field of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Amid intensifying pressure from climate change, CCS—particularly Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology—has emerged as a critical tool in achieving net-zero carbon emissions. By integrating relevant literature and applying various strategic analysis tools, this research finds that the company demonstrates a leading position in technological innovation, resource integration, and policy alignment.
The firm has been an early mover in deploying commercial-scale DAC facilities, acquiring core technology providers, and signing carbon removal agreements with international clients—actions that have helped build brand trust and technological barriers. These moves have proven instrumental in mitigating oil and gas cycle risks while advancing low-carbon transformation. Although the CCS sector still faces challenges such as high costs and regulatory uncertainty, the company’s first-mover strategies have begun to form an economic moat, suggesting long-term competitive advantages. From an investor’s perspective, as ESG investing gains momentum and carbon markets become increasingly institutionalized, strategic positioning in carbon management may serve as a key growth driver in a carbon-constrained future. This study also proposes future research directions, including cross-national comparisons, financial performance assessments, and simulations of carbon market interactions to deepen understanding of the industry's transition dynamics.
