This thesis mainly focuses on the thematic relationship between sacrifice and aestheticization in the life and work in Oscar Wilde. As a decadent artist, Oscar Wilde tends to transform his life experiences into art. During the process of transformation, the subjective affection or practical concerns are sacrificed in order to achieve an idealistic concept or aesthetic projection. Furthermore, what distinguishes Wilde from other writers is that he will reenact art in his life. That is, in order to realize his idealistic projection or aesthetic ideals in the real world, he will return to the field of life from the sphere of art, and sacrifice his real-life interests to a certain level for the fulfillment of his ideal. Similarly, Wilde’s fictional characters will also sacrifice their lives to achieve aesthetic ideals in their life. To begin with, I will discuss the intellectual climate of Wilde’s time and his close relations or friends that influence his conception of sacrifice and aestheticization. In the second chapter, I will deal with the themes of sacrifice and aestheticization in Wilde’s novella, The Picture of Dorian Gray. The four major characters represent different attitude toward the relationship between life and art. In the third chapter, I will deal with the dialectical relationship between artistic aspiration and carnal longing in Wilde’s play, Salome. I would analyze how the main figures sacrifice other people’s lives only to complete their own idealistic projections. In the fourth chapter, I will look into the thematic connection between sacrifice and aestheticization in Wilde’s fairy tales, short stories, critical dialogues, and De Profundis. In Wilde’s fairy tales, the altruistic protagonists often sacrifice themselves for their idealized beloved. In his short stories and critical dialogues, I select the ones that are related to “art of crime,” which originates from a twisted realization of the connection between sacrifice and aestheticization, as a kind of artistic beauty is achieved through criminal acts at the cost of others’ welfare or life. In De Profundis, one can see how Wilde identifies himself with the most representative figure of selfless sacrifice, Christ, for he sacrifices himself for his idealistic projection on Lord Alfred Douglas. In the concluding chapter, I would briefly discuss different motivations and consequences of sacrifice life for the sake of art.
