Traditional business thinking tends to be linear and zero-sum. Companies primarily focus on their internal operations, product development, and competitive advantages, with an emphasis on the individual company's profitability and market share. In the present day, the boundaries of traditional industries are becoming increasingly blurred, and the business environment is shifting towards the development of ecosystems. An ecosystem is a relationship structure of interdependence among stakeholders. These stakeholders may come from different industries, enabling different companies to collaborate, integrate their expertise, and deliver greater value propositions to end customers. This leads to more sustainable and long-term development.
Ecosystems rely on the participation of stakeholders. Participants should contribute to the ecosystem and derive value from their contributions, enabling the ecosystem to thrive. In the past, there was little exploration of the relationship or mutual influence between ecosystems and business models. Therefore, this research proposes the question: "How does a company develop a business model within an ecosystem?"
Finally, this research draws three conclusions: Firstly, an ecosystem itself needs a viable business model. Secondly, the development of business models within an ecosystem relies on the provisions of the ecosystem, but it also leads to a compression of the business model space. Thirdly, ecosystems and business models must be balanced in terms of value creation and capture.
