Lichen, verbally means “apparel of the land” in Chinese, forms the main idea of this study. Apparel of the land, takes a variety of forms in the nature and built environment, rich and diverse in contrary to contemporary urban form. This study suggests that cities as a dense composition of buildings, has the opportunity to be transformed into a piece of elegant apparel.
Lichen is a new urban form, a conceptual image of the cityscape, which landform determines the urban form. With buildings as the apparel of the land the confronting status between nature and cities can be avoided. The main part of the study proceeds with urban structure analysis of Kuala Lumpur City Centre Area. It depicts the resources and challenges of the city. Lastly, this study concludes with a proposal of possible solution for a selected site in Kuala Lumpur demonstrating the design methodology below.
This study proposes an urban design method, which starts with the study of existing land form and derive a new apparel accordingly. It is followed by the analysis and reading of Islamic geometric pattern, as a cultural resemblance, that derive a reference pattern according to topography. Finally, on the basis of this reference pattern, insert built forms. Built forms integrated shall determine the richness of the apparel, therefore shape the new urban form.
