Purpose: This study examined the change of network structure in relation to depressive symptoms and pubertal maturation in young adolescents over time.
Methods: Data were from the first three waves of the Taiwan Youth Project, a longitudinal study that started in 2000 and surveyed 7th graders from 40 junior high schools (Wave 1, age 13). Students were followed annually. Participants were asked to fill out a survey including social network assessment, depressive symptoms, pubertal maturation, and to name three best friends in school. The analysis was conducted using stochastic actor-oriented models. Because the increment of youth depression is more than the linear gradient of grade due to the high school entrance exam, the measures from 7th to 8th grade and 8th to 9th grade were separately treated as the indicators of environmental stressors in each state.
Results: Our findings indicate that adolescents selected friends based on the similarity in pubertal maturation from 8th to 9th grade and tended to nominate early-maturing adolescents as friends from 7th to 8th grade. Adolescents selected friends with a similar level of depressive symptoms only from 8th to 9th grade. After adjusting for gender and pubertal maturaion, the depression similarity effect was not significant, and adolescents’ depressive symptoms did not further influence their friends’ depressive symptoms.
Conclusions: Our study highlights the potentially magnifying effect of environmental stressors on adolescents’ depressive symptoms and how their depression affects the formation of friendship ties. More attention was needed to early-maturing adolescents on the association between friendship networks and depressive symptoms.
