以圖像為主的視覺化媒材是最普遍的資訊傳播與溝通方式。人類使用繪畫、編織、雕刻等方式創作視覺圖像,以傳達創作者意欲表達的概念與訊息。時至今日資訊化網路時代,以圖像為主的溝通方式,由於直覺性、易於理解的特性,仍然重要的表達形式。在虛擬環境中,為了濃縮大量資料內容以形成有效的傳達媒材,資訊視覺化(visualization)的技術已成為重要的資訊介面設計課題。本研究主要探討在虛擬環境中,如何將以文本資料為主的原始材料,以視覺化的方式表現出資訊的內容與意涵,將資料轉化成易於理解的資訊,並以視覺化的平台,幫助使用者閱讀資訊。
傳統編織的「百衲被」(Patchwork)使用了規格化的圖案拼布作為組成單元,縫補編織成為完整的視覺圖形,形成了具有時序概念與敘事結構的圖像故事,傳達編織者的意念,並且依照相同規格的編織方式,百衲被可以無限的擴張其篇幅。在本研究中引用這種概念在虛擬環境中稱為「數位編織」(digital weaving),將所收集素材數位化,進而編輯資訊,形成共同創作的集體知識。本研究進一步討論虛擬環境中的資訊視覺化,並作為資訊視覺化的概念原型。
在數位演作上,本研究以南台灣在日治時期的歷史事件與建築事件作為資料範圍,發展視覺化的資訊系統。在資訊系統發展的過程,應用了資訊組構的概念,首先就原始文本資料進行分析,歸類出共同的特徵與條件,轉化成可供資料庫儲存的格式,並進行資訊系統分析,研擬可能的發展策略及運作類型,制定出系統架構與使用介面流程,並對其展示以參數化進行視覺化介面設計。在介面設計與閱讀上,數位編織以年表式與故事式二種方式來組織時空事件的資訊地景圖像。資訊圖像的架構與視覺呈現,如同百衲被般以拼貼的方式排列於畫面上。資訊編寫者依照自我的設計意念,設定故事情境,決定故事的架構,並按照不同的限制與加權條件進行資料的編排;而資訊的閱讀者也可以依循編織的規則進行資料閱讀與加入意見,或進一步扮演資訊編寫者,編排新的故事腳本,以擴充資訊內容。
本研究以數位編織的概念發展,整合資料庫與視覺化介面技術,以視覺化的方式進行資訊的編寫/傳達/閱讀,並分別就資訊內容的數位化、資訊的技術,以及參與者三個課題討論。初步發現以視覺化圖像作為虛擬空間中資訊組織與溝通具有其潛力,數位編織用於資訊視覺化的效果應視其展示內容、目的與使用者而異。
It is common to use graphical material as tool / media in information transferring and communication in various cultures, such as painting, weaving and sculpture. Enormous information could be arranged in graphic and comprehended easily by viewers regardless of language barriers. Today, the main issue of information visualization focuses on resolving problems of information exchange in virtual environments, i.e., how to classify, modify, store, and apply data into information in appropriate context with proper graphical design.
The purpose of this thesis is to explore how to visualize time-space relevant information by using information visualization techniques. By adopting “patchworks” in traditional weaving technique as design metaphor, visualized information cells would be organized following the same pattern and increasing its content. The process is named as “digital weaving” mainly aiming at defining an information organizational structure in virtual environments by three steps: (1) data/information preparation, (2) information analysis and organization, and (3) information visualization and interface design.
The weaving process is demonstrated in an exhibition project which introduces the historical atmosphere and urban environment of Tainan in the early 20th century to the public (viewers). Since the surrounding had rapid changes from 1910 to 1945, the project developed is aiming to represent the information for recalling old memories of the buildings and urban environment in the past. The study defines four different stories consisting of collection of related information varied in formations to examine varieties of patchworks. In the process of information organization, the study develops information retrieval steps and digitalization patterns by analyzing original text-based data, with initial database structure design. In the process of information visualization and interface design, the visualized information is displayed as patchworks. The patchwork will be considered as a platform of information perceived by organizers as well as viewers.
Digital weaving is discussed in three aspects: (1) content of data digitalization, (2) technique of information visualization, and (3) participants of information system. With demonstration and examination in the research, the potential of digital weaving reveals in organization and representation information with patchwork structure in virtual environments.
