  • Most of the existing methods to obtain rule curves of a reservoir are based on trial and error procedures that require for their utilization an experienced engineer in the processes of water storage and utilization. Therefore there is a need for a well defined and efficient method for the development of rule curves that avoids trial and error procedures and allows any engineer to quickly arrive at a reliable curve.

This study determines a probability distribution of future water storage shortages, based on the known existing demands and the historical data. Periods of time that experience identical water shortage rates and their associated probability of occurrence were used to obtain new operation rule curves. This procedure was applied to Tsengwen and Wushantou reservoirs joined operation, which currently presents curves that date from far back, and might be outdated. It is desired to improve the generation of electricity, restricted to the satisfaction of water demand as a first order priority. The obtained curves were compared to the existing ones and their use was simulated to corroborate their efficiency. With these curves it was obtained a storage volume of the Wushantou reservoir that maximizes the production of electricity.
