Open and honest communication with their children can effectively reduce the impact of parental cancer on children. Compared with other healthcare professionals, the nursing staff plays an important role in promoting parent-child communication about parental cancer. However, we know very little about nurses’ perception of helping parents communicate about their illness to children. This study aimed to examine the nurses’ perceptions, difficulties and educational needs of parent-child communication about parental cancer. An exploratory, qualitative design was used with purposive sample of 10 nurses recruited through snowball sampling from a district teaching hospital in Hualien. Individual in-depth interview was applied. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Four parts with some themes and subthemes of nurses’ perception were emerged including: the first and secondary part is the importance of cancer care and the self-identified role and function in nurses’ perceptions of parent-child communication about parental cancer, the third part is the considered factors when nurses administered of parent-child communication about parental cancer, and the last part is the need in nurses’ perceptions of parent-child communication about parental cancer. The finding indicated that the knowledge and perceptions of nurses about the importance of parental communication with children was deficient. In addition, many problems existing in nursing system and medical policy made it difficult for nurses to help parents diagnosed with to communicate with their children. Therefore, it is essential to raise the awareness of the importance of communication between healthcare professionals and parents having cancer about this issue.
