Interpersonal Conflict Resolution Style (ICRS) refers to the different manners of responding to or resolving disagreements with another individual. This study aims to test the notion that a diverse and mostly integrative preference of ICRS is driven by higher interpersonal competence (IC), which transfers to higher self-esteem. Trait competitiveness (TC) is predicted to moderate the link between IC and different ICRSs. TC and harmonious motivations were predicted to moderate the mediation of self-esteem between IC and different ICRSs. The first part of the study is qualitative research, which looks at how interpersonal conflicts typically occur between undergraduate students in a Taiwanese university using critical incident technique. For the second (main) part of the study, undergraduate students were recruited to complete questionnaire surveys measuring IC, self-esteem, and ICRS in response to different contexts. IC was found to predict integrating style and competing style, but not with obliging and avoiding style. Self-esteem was found to mediate all but the relationship between IC and competing style. TC and disintegration avoidance motivation were found to have no moderating effects, while harmony enhancement motivation was found to moderate the mediation of self-esteem through IC and competing style, as well as the mediation of self-esteem through IC and avoiding style. Implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
