First, Poly(vinyl acetate)-block-Poly(vinyl formamide) (PVAc-b-PNVF) block copolymers were successfully synthesis by a combination of cobalt-mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. PVAc were first synthesized via CMRP with cobalt(Ⅱ) acetylacetonate in redox system. The cobalt complexes attached to chain end were modified into a xanthate group chain transfer agent by reacting with dimethyl sulfoxide at 50℃,producing PVAc macro chain transfer agents (PVAc macroCTA). The RAFT polymerization of vinylformamide (NVF) with PVAc macroCTA was conducted in dimethyl sulfoxide at 90℃ to obtain PVAc-b-PNVF block copolymers. The PVAc-b-PNVF copolymer was hydrolyzed to double hydrophilic Poly(vinyl alcohol)-block-Poly(vinyl amine) (PVA-b-PVAm) copolymer under basic condition.Well-defined PVA-b-PVAm block copolymer were confirmed by aqueous GPC and 1H NMR.
Second, Schiff base of polyvinyl amine were synthesized by the reaction with salicylaldehyde and pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde. Different mol% polymeric Schiff base can be controlled by different inlet ratio. And eco-friendly reaction or called “green synthesis” of Schiff base also be synthesized by stirring PVAm with different aldehydes in water as solvent. The product is purified by centrifugation and filtration followed by washing with water and dried in vacuum.
